Autumn at the Lake

.

The feel of Autumn falls about me,

oh, I love this time of year.

Pristine silence, except in the leaves,

the subtle, rustle, of a deer.

.

Screen doors close earlier each evening,

I hear them, here and there.

A feel of urgency, to wind things down,

yet, to linger in the Autumn air.

.

As a child, I came with family,

but, they're gone or moved away.

It's my haven, I rush to now,

obligations call, but I'd wish to stay.

.

I love winter, yet I'll miss this so,

all the vivid color, the eeiry call of the loon.

A golden glow, over the water,

an Autumn haze, across the moon.

.

.

Monkey

.

Garfield, what a hoot,

I agree he's some galoot.

But I've got one worse than him,

she's such a nut, they must be kin.

.

Five pounds of grumpy, gutsy fur,

not a bit of it is demure.

You pick her up, she wants down,

her discretion rules, she wears the crown.

.

She sniffs her bowl with great distain,

"it's good stuff, why complain?"

I guess my mind is in decline,

the food she wants, of course, is mine.

.

Overstay her welcome, she's too cunning,

one re-ooow and I come running.

She is the queen, my bed, her throne,

putting up with me if I leave her alone!

.

.

Good Kids!

.

Don't think for a moment

that animals are fools.

Within their species,

they know well, the rules.

.

Learning from elders

by paying attention.

And seldom are prone

to require detention.

.

And imagine, no drugs,

no drinking or smoking.

And asked to behave,

wouldn't think, "Are you joking?"

.

.

Animals, Animals

.

Animals are a great part of me,

sometimes someone asks me why.

The answer is, is simply,

they never make me cry.

.

They never keep score,

accepting who you are.

And never about changing you,

or putting you down, you're a star.

.

Only food, shelter and kindness,

for what they give, so little is asked.

Love and attention, a little play,

it's the easiest task.

.

There's no presumption,

only faith in you.

No pretention, they're never fake,

being their god is your due.

.

.

Critters

.

Critters and creatures,

all our fuzzy pets.

Tho' they make a mess,

they're as good as it gets.

.

Your pencils chewed up,

your undies, too.

Socks to be sure,

this place is a zoo.

.

Dirt on the floors,

piddle on the rugs.

Faced with wet kisses,

you gotta give hugs.

.

You know your stuck

in one furry morras,

Would you, this again,

you know you wouldn't pass.

.

.

Celia

.

Celia is my big red cat,

where she shouldn't be, is where she's at.

Perching on my just cleaned clothes,

kneading them with prickly toes.

.

Pestering to be fed by noon,

begging again, it seems too soon.

Her favorite food, in bowl it goes,

she strolls away with upturned nose.

.

I buy her toys, the more to play,

she yawns back, not today.

I'll get around to you sometime,

but independence is so sublime.

.

.

Loyalty?

.

Who easily get enough of you,

very quickly you see.

Who may claw the furniture,

and on your clothes he'll pee.

.

If you looked in your wallet,

and there wasn't enough in it.

For the food he craves,

who would leave you in a minute.

.

Of course you know the answer,

and you know where he's at.

The one who hides under the bed,

your haughty, naughty, cat.

.

.

Jake the Faker

.

Jake the faker, that's our dog,

by the fireside, he'd portray a log.

When asking him to go out,

he'll avoid me, without a doubt.

.

He thinks 40 degrees is cold,

well, he never has been very bold.

Opening the door makes him whine,

closing it, of course, is devine.

.

C'mon Jake, I plead, I beg,

not a quiver, of a leg.

Sternly then, "We're  going outside",

he runs undercover to hide.

.

When I think I've lost the war,

he grabs his leash, and bolts for the door.

What's with this guy, is he nuts,

nope, it's Jake the Faker, King of mutts.

"Just an Animal"

.

If I never hear again,

it's "just an animal," I'll be so glad.

To some that might sound right,

but, any loss of an animal is sad.

.

They're great as a friend, eager to love

there's no puzzle there.

No need to explain yourself,

anyway, they'd not care.

.

At times, "that animal" was all I had,

and never did I feel put down.

She'd make me laugh, it lifted me,

"that animal", my little clown.

Animal Lovers

.

Animal lovers, come together,

even knowing we can't save them all.

At times it may seem thankless,

but, together we'll not fall.

.

They need us so badly,

they can't do it on their own.

It's an honor to care for our friends,

and show them they're not alone.

.

When we're feeling hopeless

and don't know what to do,

We''ll remember the motto within our soul,

If not us, then who, then who?
